Police in Ferguson, a Missouri town hit by riots over the killing of an unarmed black teenager last year. are on high alert after two officers suffered "very serious gunshot injuries" during a demonstration after the resignation of the town's police chief, which followed a report alleging racial bias in his department.
Iraqi government forces continued their advance into Tikrit on several fronts, forcing Islamic State militants to fall back to the city centre, reports said. The battle for Tikrit is being led with about 3,000 soldiers making a final push for the city, backed by 20,000 Popular Mobilisation militiamen and a much smaller force of Sunni tribesmen.
Iraq's first Christian-only brigade of regular forces has graduated. Its brief is to help retake the community's towns and villages from Islamic State militants. Fighters performed exercises in front of Kurdish and Assyrian officials in the north-western town of Fishkhabur, near the borders with Syria and Turkey.
A British military healthcare worker in Sierra Leone who has tested positive for the deadly Ebola virus was transferred back to the UK. He was collected at RAF Northolt and taken under motorcycle escort for specialist treatment.
